6/9/2023 0 Comments Batman court of owls vol 2In the Batcave, the Joker appears behind Bruce, joking that the latter actually practices brooding. Gordon deduces that Batman had a man on the inside, and seems suspicious of security video showing Batman and the Joker fighting together, but his friend reassures him briefly, before disappearing into the night. He had been investigating a weak link at Arkham - a guard named Dan Matthews - who opened the cell doors on Batman when he was coming for him. Batman explains that this wasn't a breakout. Later, Batman reconnoiters with Commissioner Gordon on the roof of the Gotham City Police Headquarters. They appear to have made some kind of alliance, and when they get back into the fray, they fight as a team in perfect conjunction to take down all of the escaped inmates. In the alley below, he prepares to go back inside, but the Joker sneaks up on him. With superior fighting skills, he manages to hold his own until he winds up launched through an upper window. 6/9/2023 0 Comments Misery kingHowever, the slowness of the plot until that point really builds the anticipation. The real action – the shit hitting the fan, so to speak – doesn’t begin until about three quarters of the way through the novel when Annie gets impossibly more sadistic in her actions. It’s been so long time since a book has had me recoiling back in my chair, my mouth hanging agape as I frantically re-read a sentence just to be 100% certain I’ve read what I think I’ve just read. Well, there’s a first time for everything…īut I mean that as a compliment. Have I ever described a book as ‘brutal’ in any of my reviews? Nope, didn’t think I had. And now he had to bring Misery back to life. And when she found out what Paul had done to Misery, she didn’t like it. The bad news was that she was Paul’s Number One Fan. The good news was that Annie was a nurse and has pain-killing drugs. Annie Wilkes had pulled him from the wreck, brought him to her remote mountain home, splinted and set his mangled legs. That’s when the car accident happened, and he woke up in pain in a strange bed. And now he wanted to get on to some real writing. Misery had made him rich she was the heroine of a string of bestsellers. Paul Sheldon had just killed her – with relief, with joy. 6/9/2023 0 Comments Zami bookIn High School she joins a group of outcasts who call themselves "The Branded" and begins to write poetry. She has a young friend named Gennie who commits suicide and who was Audre's first love. As she grows up, she continues to find herself alienated. Yet she displays strong verbal talents, particularly for writing, from an early age. She grows up in Catholic School but faces racism as a child, along with the handicap of being legally blind. She is a child of black parents from the West Indies. The story begins with Lorde's childhood in Harlem. Her race, gender and sexuality were all rejected by her society at large thus, much of the book functions with Audre living in a society that either ignores or rejects her and her telling tales of secret lesbian love. Audre grows up as a black woman and a lesbian, and in American society in the 40s, 50s, and 60s, this was a triple-threat. It covers many themes but focuses primarily on the close bounds she develops with women throughout her life, first with her mother and then with various lovers throughout the book. Zami: A New Spelling of My Name tells the story of Audre Lorde's passage from childhood to young adulthood. 6/8/2023 0 Comments Lair by James HerbertInstead of an art teacher, we have an actual rat expert on the scene, avenging his family’s death from one of the many thousands killed in the first book and throwing himself into the world of extermination. It’s improved by the hero, in a way, over the first book. The rebel rat broods almost as much as the hero. It’s very similar to the first book–set in the woods (where the rats have fled since they now associate London with mass death), where they have set up a new rat HQ (basically same spooky ruined mansion as the first one), with 2 headed albino monstrosities as ruler, with special rat guards, and a growing rat revolution. But there is a character in Lair that might be an insight into James Herbert’s real dark side – what if he had not become a success as a writer? Might he have turned into the gym teacher character I’ll bring up later in this review? Its no coincidence the pair published their first book the same year, just on different sides of the pond. Along with Stephen King, Herbert was an innovator and modernizer of the horror novel. This is Part 2 of his Rat trilogy of books and it still holds up well nearly 40 years later. Epping Forest in this case…I have a weakness for stories where animals or insects turn on humans. 6/8/2023 0 Comments All Good Things by Emma NewmanEmma later joined the team that launched the Huffington Post in EMEA and sat on the board of Clear Channel UK as their Marketing Director, helping to drive their transition into the digital space. She spent much of her life ill and frail, and she never expected to find love. Robert Browning used to call his wife “the Portuguese,” which is why she chose this title. Sonnets from the Portuguese is comprised of forty-four sonnets. She’s nevertheless best known for these romantic sonnets. Elizabeth Barrett Browning was a well-known writer and literary reviewer during the Victorian period, and much of her writing is feminist in nature. The title of the collection is deliberately obscure to disguise the personal and romantic nature of the poetry. They are among the most famous sonnets in the English language. First published in 1850, these passionate poems focus on Browning’s affection for her husband, famed poet Robert Browning. Sonnets from the Portuguese is a collection of love sonnets by Elizabeth Barrett Browning. Bodies immerse themselves in colourful steaminess. Toes reach towards one another in a pool, hungrily. Let’s face it: these paintings are also sexy. If the dogs in Tohuwabohu remind you of Bruegel’s The Hunters in the Snow, these dogs are its modern translation: they haven’t come back tired from the hunt, but play around as joyful pets. This is the space Haake’s paintings occupy, they’re poetic, not epic. Sometimes, there’s more to the everyday than repetition. Human life is the narrative substance of these paintings, but the protagonists are often spatially peripheral: the shower curtain in Honey Lotion takes up most of the canvas and the football in Header almost hides the player’s face-his eyes are closed, reverently, almost praying. Perhaps those spaces in between us are where we find each other. Haake’s paintings contemplate moments: colour and form take centre stage, with human interaction creeping in from the margins. They can be affectionate, endearing, even a bit sly-they show what you think you knew but with a new flavour. Henri Haake’s paintings are light and radiant, drawing you into the present. What’s in a moment? If anything, in front of you is a tiger rug the tiger sticks out his tongue-you notice a toe, a knee? Maybe it took you a second to realise what the hell is going on. Yet, I feel that is where the similarities ended. Having watched the original an umpteen number of times, it was brilliant and exciting to read it. For me, personally, the only reason why the book was exciting enough to get a 4 star rating was because while I was reading, I was easily able to picture the scenes from the movie. Even if I ignore how extraordinarily simple the writing was, the story didn't feel as empowered as it did in the movie. Personally, I'm always a big fan of novelisations but this one fell a little bland. Loosely based around the events of Jurassic Park, the novel by Michael Crichton, this novelisation has barely anything new to offer that the movie didn't. Jurassic Park: The Junior Novelisation is the written version of the original Jurassic Park movie (1995).
